In recent years, the City of Los Angeles has undertaken transformative restoration projects at both Hollyhock House and Residence A, the Wright-designed guesthouse also in Barnsdall Park. Each year, nearly 100 passionate and insightful volunteer docents contribute thousands of hours of service to the mission of sharing the home’s vibrant history and alluring architectural features with more than 43,000 annual visitors. Barnsdall Art Park has accessible parking spaces on top of the hill in the Hollyhock House motor court, located between the Visitor Center (former garage) and the house. The art and education activities featured above were also initially part of the guide, which offers audiences of all ages fun and fascinating tools to explore site history and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. In doing so, she provided an accessible arts center to the community that incorporated and preserved the famous Hollyhock House as a crucial component. With seventeen rooms and seven bathrooms, the massive residence was ultimately not what Barnsdall wanted. Indeed, her dislike of the Hollyhock House was such that she decided not to complete the artists’ colony.
The district has a slight Latino majority, with white voters also accounting for nearly 40% of the electorate, according to data from California Target Book. It includes cities like Madera, Ceres and Merced and portions of Modesto and Turlock, as well as rural swaths of the San Joaquin Valley. “Right now, the single most vulnerable Republican incumbent is John Duarte, in my view,” Wasserman said of the California races.

Perched on a 36-acre hilltop in East Hollywood, Wright’s first and most widely known West Coast design defies stylistic categorization. As with many of Wright's residences, Hollyhock House has an "introverted" exterior with windows that seem hidden from the outside, and is not easy to decode from the outside. The house is arranged around a central courtyard with one side open to form a kind of theatrical stage (never used as such), and a complex system of split levels, steps and roof terraces around that courtyard. The design features exterior walls that are tilted back at 85 degrees (which helps provide a "Mayan" appearance sometimes referred to as the Mayan Revival style), leaded art glass in the windows, a grand fireplace with a large abstract bas-relief, and a moat. Water is meant to flow from a pool in the courtyard through a tunnel to this inside moat, and out again to a fountain. 100 years after Frank Lloyd Wright finished construction on Aline Barnsdall’s Residence A guest house, the City of Los Angeles has concluded phase I restoration of this landmark structure.
